I first experienced derealization and depersonalization in 2011 as part of my first panic attack. I had no idea there was a name for it.
For 7 years I struggled with panic attacks and dpdr. I felt alone, and broken and was worried for my sanity. When I experienced dpdr I felt like I was high and the world looked weird, like an underworld or ghost town.I felt detached and like I was watching myself from the outside.
I felt like this was way more than a panic attack.
What made it scarier is that I had a hard time explaining how I felt and I didn’t feel like therapists or psychiatrists knew what I was experiencing.
Today I know derealization & depersonalization are defense mechanisms triggered by severe stress. I rarely experience them, but when I do I see them as the love letter that they are.
